Calgary powers past Fraser Valley for 3-1 win

CALGARY – It was redemption for the home team as the University of Calgary Dinos claimed a 3-1 victory over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades at Dinosaur Field Saturday afternoon.

The Dinos record now sits at 2-2-2, while the Cascades have a record of 1-4-0.

Calgary put up the first goal of the game in the sixth minute of action with a perfectly executed free kick from William Omoreniye, pinging off the cross bar and into the back of the net.

Play remained aggressive for both teams, but ultimately the Dinos asserted their dominance on the field after midfielder Gianmarco Plenzik netted his first goal of the season in the 41st minute, extending the Dinos lead to 2-0 over the Cascades late in the first half.

The Cascades looked to be making a momentum swing in the second half of the match, after Mateo Brazinha put his team on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute to bring the score to 2-1.

As tensions rose late into the second half, Fraser Valley team captain Trevor Zanatta received a red card in the 80th minute of play, cutting the Cascades' momentum short.

Less than one minute later, the Dinos made the most of the man advantage. Amanuel Petros blasted a ball near to beat the keeper Calgary's third goal of the game and Petros' third goal of the season. Nicolas Kostiw earned an assist on the goal.

"They didn't make it easy for us, but to get those three points is really nice," Dinos head coach Brendan O'Connell said. "We knew it was going to be a hard game, but the team showed a lot of character and resilience."

Jackson Cowx had a strong showing in net for the Cascades with seven saves. Dinos keeper Jake Ruschkowski also did well, tallying three saves on the afternoon. Also of note, Ruschkowski became the program leader for games played by a goalie with 61.

The Dinos will be back at Dinosaur Field tomorrow to face off against the No. 10 UBC Thunderbirds Sunday, Sep. 18 at 2:15.

Meanwhile, the Cascades will head to Saskatoon to take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, Sunday.
