CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team will look to close out their lenghty homestand on a strong note as they host two more games from Dinosaur Field this weekend, starting Saturday.
Fraser Valley comes to campus for a Saturday matinee at 1 p.m. Then, on Sunday, the Dinos will square off against 10th-ranked UBC at 2:15 p.m.
Both matches will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. LOOKING BACK – The Dinos have plenty of history with both of this weekend's opponents. Calgary is 9-5-2 in conference play all-time against Fraser Valley, including claiming wins in the last three matchups. Meanwhile, UBC has had Calgary's number of late, with the last Dinos win in the series coming back in 2010.
2. SUPER SUB – Midfielder
Amanuel Petros has come off the bench in each of the first five games this season but has made his impact known, racking up a team-high six points. The rookie saw the field for only five minutes late in the game at Mount Royal and instantly made his impact known with a late goal, before adding two assists and the game-winning goal in the second half of last weekend's win over Saskatchewan.
3. RECAPPING THE WEEK – The Dinos sit 1-2-2 heading into this weekend following a 1-1 showing last week. Things started with a thrilling comeback win over Saskatchewan, falling down 2-0 at the half before ripping off three second-half goals to claim the three points. Inconsistent play then doomed the Dinos on Sunday as they fell, 2-1, at home to Lethbridge.
4. ROAD TRIP – After a four-game homestand and three weeks straight getting to stay in the city of Calgary, the Dinos will make their first trip out of the province next weekend. The team will head to British Colombia to take on Thompson Rivers Friday before heading to Langley for a showdown with Trinity Western Saturday.
5. GOING PRO –
Gareth Smith-Doyle signed a multi-year professional contract with the Calgary Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League earlier this summer. The former Dino and Canada West all-rookie honouree is the latest to move onto the next level after his time in the Scarlet and Gold, joining former standout Dominick Zator, currently also playing in the CPL with York United FC.
