Petros the hero as Dinos get first win

CALGARY – Amanuel Petros scored the game-winning goal for the University of Calgary Dinos men's soccer team in stoppage time to secure a 3-2 win against the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Dinosaur Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies started the game off strong with a 2-0 lead developed by Sergio Molina and Kuhle Bekwayo going into halftime. The Dinos took back the momentum in the second half with goals scored by Joey Plenzik, William Omoreniye and the game-winner by Petros.

"I was coming off the bench, I needed to show a lot of character and a lot of passion to get our team back in the game," explained Petros. "The only thing that was holding us back was ourselves, we couldn't finish our chances in the first half."

Following a very important first win of the season, the Dinos now hold a record of 1-1-2. The Huskies' record is now 1-2-1 following their second straight defeat.

"[This win] is so important for us because it is our first win of the season. It was good to be at home and we can go again tomorrow."

During an aggressive first half where both teams had scoring chances, it was the Huskies who managed to score in both the 36th and 44th minute to establish a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Dinos' turnaround began in the 56th minute with a header by rookie Joey Plenzik set up by Petros. Six minutes later, William Omoreniye tied the game as he gained possession on the left side and quickly fired it home.

The best was saved for the final seconds of the match when Petros broke in from the right side and beat the Saskatchewan goalkeeper to clinch a Dinos win.

Calgary netminder Jake Ruschkowski made six saves on eight shots on goal, while Jaron Slopinski denied five of the eight shots he faced in the Huskies' net.

The Dinos are back home Sunday to face off against the Lethbridge Pronghorns at 2:15 p.m. The Huskies will stay overnight in Calgary and take on the Mount Royal Cougars at 3 p.m.
