Four Dinos selected in CFL Draft

| By:
CALGARYJalen Philpot was selected fifth overall by the Calgary Stampeders, just four slots before brother Tyson Philpot was selected by Montreal Alouettes to headline another outstanding day for the University of Calgary Dinos football program in the Canadian Football League Draft Tuesday evening.

Four total Dinos heard their names called Tuesday, as Jacob Plamondon (Edmonton Elks/territorial pick) and Subomi Oyesoro (Ottawa REDBLACKS/49th overall) will look to join their former teammates in the CFL this season.

"It's very exciting to see four of our players get an opportunity to go to the CFL," Dinos head coach Wayne Harris said. "It's part of our history, sending so many of our players to the next level.

"All four of these players were a big part of our 2019 Vanier Cup Championship team, and we're excited to see what all of them can do now with this opportunity."

Jalen Philpot – a 6-foot-1 receiver from Delta, B.C. – was the first name off the board for the Dinos on Tuesday, being selected fifth overall by the Calgary Stampeders.

"I'm super excited. This is definitely a dream come true," the two-time First Team All-Canadian said on TSN's live coverage following the pick. "Calgary was No. 1 on my board. That's where I wanted to go. They made me very happy. I'm ready to get back there and get ready to work."

Tyson Philpot – also a 6-1 receiver – was next, being taken ninth overall by the Montreal Alouettes.

"I'm just extremely honoured," the 2018 U SPORTS Rookie of the Year said on TSN following his selection. "I put in 17 years of work and to see my name get called – no matter where I got called, I'm just so blessed. I'm ready to get to camp and get to work."

The Philpots became the 26th and 27th all-time first-round selections in Dinos history.

"We're very proud of Jalen and Tyson," Harris said. "Congrats to both of them, and their parents. They're two of the hardest working individuals ever to come through our program. And to be drafted right next to each other – I don't know if I've ever seen brothers drafted in the first round together. That's a special moment."

Next off the board was Jacob Plamondon. The 6' 3" defensive lineman from Red Deer was selected as a territorial pick by the Edmonton Elks following the second round.

"I'm so proud of Jacob for all the work he's put in to get to this point," Harris said. "He fought through some injury battles and really worked hard this year to get ready for the CFL. He's got great speed off the edge and he'll be able to contribute on special teams, too. I think he's going to do very well."

The final Dino to hear his name called on the night was Calgary native Subomi Oyesoro. A 6-foot-1 linebacker, the Crescent Heights product was chosen in the sixth round with the 49th overall pick by the Ottawa REDBLACKS.

"We're excited for everybody who comes through our program, but this is a testament to Calgary football – all the way through the ranks," Harris said. "The training they get here in Calgary is the best in the country, and you can see that today. Subomi has the size, strength and speed to play in the CFL. I'm very happy to see him grow and get to this level."

This all comes just three days after Calgary had its first ever former player taken in the National Football League Draft, as Deane Leonard heard his name called in the seventh round of this past weekend's draft by the Los Angeles Chargers.

With the four draftees on Tuesday, the Dinos have now had 67 football players selected in the CFL Draft since 2006 – the most of any school in North America. In the program's history, 163 have now been drafted into the Canadian Football League.
