CALGARY – After a thrilling, 4-3 comeback win in Game 3 of the Canada West Quarter-final in Saskatoon, the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team now turns its attention to a semifinal series against the Alberta Golden Bears, starting Friday.
Puck drop for all three games is scheduled for 7 p.m., with every game scheduled to be streamed live on Canada West TV, presented by Co-op.
INSTANT CLASSIC
The series win over the Saskatchewan Huskies will be one to remember for a while for Dinos fans. Not only did Calgary avenge their playoff loss from the 2019-20 season, but they also erased a long history of playoff exits at the hands of the Huskies. The Dinos had been just 3-10 all-time in playoff series against the Huskies, with all three previous wins coming in Calgary. It marked the first playoff series win over Saskatchewan since a 4-1 win in game three back in March of 2011.
DÉJÀ VU?
After taking down one prominent rival to start the postseason, the Dinos will now look to duplicate that feat in this weekend's series against Alberta. Calgary went 1-2 against the Golden Bears during the regular season this year, splitting a two-game series in Edmonton just over one month ago.
The two squads have plenty of postseason history, squaring off 22 times in the last 35 seasons. While the Bears hold the overall lead in the series, Calgary has plenty of memorable wins, including taking down their provincial rivals to win the Canada West title in both 1988 and 1990.
REGULAR SEASON REWIND
The Dinos finished the very unique 2021-22 regular season with a 12-7-1-0 record in conference play. After sweeping Trinity Western to start the second semester, Calgary captured key series splits with UBC, Alberta and Mount Royal – the teams that finished as the top-three seeds in the Canada West standings. The regular-season finale was especially encouraging, taking down rival and red-hot Mount Royal, 6-4, ending a seven-game win streak for the Cougars.
