Dinos and Pronghorns set for Seniors Weekend clash

| By:
CALGARY – Playing in Calgary for the fourth-consecutive week, the University of Calgary Dinos (9-3) host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (4-6) this Friday and Saturday inside the Jack Simpson Gym.

During the penultimate week of the Canada West regular season, both teams will look to build momentum heading into the stretch run. With the Olympics in full swing, it's time to take a look at the events the Dinos need podium results in to come out on top.

BIATHLON
Shooting a league-best 39-percent with the second-most makes per game; the three-pointer is critical to the half-court offence for the Dinos. This past Friday against the Mount Royal Cougars, the well dried up in the third quarter and the ability to adjust was critical in earning the victory. As all hoopers know, when the shot isn't there, you need some fast skis and great wax.

SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING
Pure pandemonium will ensue in the trenches this weekend. Lethbridge has won its games by controlling the glass on both ends of the floor. The matchup features two of the four best rebounders in CW (Calgary's Mason Foreman and Lethbridge's Chad Oviatt), but it may come down to the secondary rebounders. The Dinos will need to send as many bodies into the fray as possible to come out of the pack with the ball.

PAIRS FIGURE SKATING
All season long, we have seen effective two-man offence from Calgary, displaying artistic high-pick and roll actions with cutters soaring to the rim. On the defensive side, they face a new test this week, taking on an incredibly balanced Pronghorn attack. Rotations and communication are a must to land the throw axel, err I mean compete defensively.

THE OLD GUYS
Before Saturday night's game, the Dinos will recognize eight players who concluded their basketball careers in either 2021 or 2022. That list includes Tobi Adelodun, Max Eisele, Mason Foreman, Simon Kutzschmar, Brett Layton, Jake Nielson, Sasha Pojuzina, and Ali Raza.

SCOUTING REPORT

NOTES
  • Lethbridge returns to action following last week's postponement against MacEwan.
  • Former Dino Angelo Mbituyimana recorded his first career double-double on Jan. 21 in a win over Mount Royal, before repeating the feat one day later. The third-year guard has been a catalyst off the bench for the Pronghorns.
  • Conceding the fewest attempts and makes from beyond the arc, the three-point defence of the Pronghorns has been relentless this year. They will face their biggest challenge yet against the scorching Dinos.

UP NEXT
Calgary will close out the regular season in two weeks with a weekend series up in Edmonton, taking on Alberta Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26-27.
