Team effort pushes Dinos to big win

CALGARY – Behind some hot shooting in the second half and clutch plays down the stretch, the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team got back in the win column Saturday with a 58-54 victory over Mount Royal at Kenyon Court.

The Dinos led by as many as 12 midway through the third before coming up with some strong defensive moments and clutch shooting down the stretch to split the weekend series and improve to 7-5 on the season.

Mya Proctor finished with 12 points – her fourth consecutive performance reaching double figures – to go with her five rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Annacy Palmer got hot late and also finished with 12 points, while Lily Pink had her strongest showing of the new year with 10 points and six rebounds.

Veronika Lavergne also had a nice night, finishing with six points, a game-high nine rebounds and four blocks.

Jenika Martens led the way for Mount Royal (4-8) with a game-high 14 points to go with seven boards.

After a cold-shooting first half that saw the Dinos hold a 26-19 lead at the break, Calgary started to see their shots fall. Reyna Crawford opened the second half by burying a wide-open three-pointer. Pink netted seven of her 10 points in the third quarter and a late layup by Jordyn Cullum made it 45-34 Dinos after three.

The Dinos maintained their 11-point edge after a lay-in by Palmer with 5:44 left. But then, the Cougars simply couldn't miss.

MRU was able to chisel Calgary's lead down to just one at 55-54 with less than one minute to play.

The Dinos didn't flinch.

On the ensuing Calgary possession, Palmer weaved through the entire Cougar defence for a contested bucket to push the lead back to three. Pink would add an insurance free throw to put the game out of reach.

Calgary won the rebounding battle, 43-41, and connected on 13 of their 24 shots (54 percent) in the second half.

The Dinos now return home for a weekend series against Lethbridge, starting Friday night at 6 p.m. from inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
