Pronghorns stay hot on Dinos' Senior Night

CALGARY – Jessica Haenni scored 21 points to lead the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 70-67 win over the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday night.

The Lethbridge victory spoiled Seniors Night at the Jack Simpson Gym, where the Dinos honoured five graduating players – Reyna Crawford, Jordyn Cullum, Tiarra Davis, Christy Fehr, and Veronika Lavergne.

A Haenni jumper with 43 seconds late made it a two-possession game in the late stages. Calgary brought it back to a three-point game, but a buzzer-beating shot to tie it proved unsuccessful.

The Dinos slip to 7-6 on the regular season, while the Pronghorns extend their win streak to nine games and improve to 9-4. They match the Alberta Pandas with a Central Division-best nine wins.

In a season that has seen young talent rise to the occasion for Calgary, fifth-year forward Lavergne had one of her best games as a Dino with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

"The respective varying journey of these five shows you that a collegiate career is not always a straight line," said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings when speaking about his senior class. "At times it is a misfortunate of injury, other adversity, or change, and at other times it is built on opportunity to complete a collegiate playing career where the possibilities lie."

The Pronghorns came out hard in the first half as they led by six after 10 minutes of action. The visitors built upon that advantage, pulling ahead by as many as 18 into the late stages of the third quarter.

The Dinos flipped the switch during the second half as they poured basket after basket to pull within one score on multiple occasions.

With only three seconds remaining Dinos guard Annacy Palmer had a chance to tie the game from beyond the arc but left it just short.

While Haenni led the way for Lethbridge, Palmer was the top scorer for Calgary with 17 points.

The Dinos and Pronghorns face off again on Saturday, Feb. 12 with a 5 p.m. tipoff at the Jack Simpson Gym.
