Fast start powers Dinos past Cougars

CALGARY – Five Dinos scored in double figures as the University of Calgary men's basketball team got hot early and did just enough down the stretch for an 86-78 road win over Mount Royal Friday night from Kenyon Court.

The win is the fifth in a row for Calgary, improving to 8-3 in Canada West play, while Mount Royal now sits at 5-6 on the season.

Ezeoha Santiago and Noah Wharton each finished with 17 points to lead the way for Calgary. Mason Foreman came up big down the stretch to finish with 16 points and 14 rebounds for his third straight double-double. Jeffrey Tezo scored 15 and Aidan Smith added 10 and seven in a very balanced Dinos attack.

Nate Petrone finished with a game-high 30 points for Mount Royal, 22 of which came in the second half.

The Dinos came out of the gates on fire, connecting on 10 of their 20 shots in the opening quarter, including going 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Santiago was the catalyst early, burying all four of his three-point attempts in the opening frame as the Scarlett and Red raced out to a 33-15 lead after one.

After holding a 45-30 lead at the break, the Dinos' hot shooting cooled off in the third, while the Cougars seemingly couldn't miss. Despite MRU whittling Calgary's early advantage down to one on a few occasions, the Dinos always had an answer and never relinquished the lead.

Entering the fourth up one, Manyang Tong opened things up with a big bucket, followed by triples from Smith and Wharton to quickly make it an eight-point edge. A number of Dinos came up with clutch moments down the stretch, including four successful free throws by Wharton in the final 30 seconds to ice this one away.

The Dions finished the game shooting 42.6 overall, including going 8-for-13 (62 percent) in the fourth quarter. They won the rebounding battle, 44-41, and connected on a season-high 22 free throws in the win.

Calgary will look to complete the season sweep of Mount Royal Saturday afternoon, with tipoff scheduled for 6 pm from Kenyon Court.
