Dinos complete Crowchild season sweep

CALGARYMason Foreman posted a double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the University of Calgary Dinos to an 80-78 road win over Mount Royal Saturday night from Kenyon Court.

The win completes the four-game season sweep of the Crowchild Classic series for the Dinos, who now improve to 9-3 after posting their sixth consecutive win.

While the 28 points are a season high for Foreman, the big night is nothing new, as he has now turned in a double-double in each of his last four performances and five of his last six.

Noah Wharton came up with a number of big shots and finished with 15 points on the night, while Ezeoha Santiago also scored in double figures with 10 points.

One night after scoring 30 points, Nate Petrone once again led the way for Mount Royal (5-7) with 17 points. Holt Tomie added another nine for the Cougars, including a half-court shot at the buzzer to make the final score look closer than it was.

Trailing by six early in the second half, the Dinos offense started to find its rhythm. Aidan Smith got things going with a three-pointer. Foreman then added a pair of buckets sandwiched around a pair of free throws from Santiago. Foreman then hit a three of his own at the 5:04 mark to give Calgary a 49-48 lead and they never trailed the rest of the way.

Javier Ramos-Yzquierdo made a nice move on a fastbreak lay-in, followed by a triple from Wharton and a pair of free throws from Aingar William and suddenly the Dinos led by seven at the end of the quarter.

Mount Royal inched back closer late in the game to pull within three, but a huge three by Santiago with just 47 seconds left removed any doubt in the Dinos sixth straight win.

Calgary again won the rebounding battle Saturday, 41-38, including grabbing 18 offensive boards, which led to 22 second-chance points.

The Dinos now return home for a weekend series against Lethbridge, starting Friday at 8 p.m. from the Jack Simpson Gym.
