Dinos take the field at Victoria 7s

VICTORIA – The University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team holds a 1-2 record following the first day of competition at the Canada West Rugby 7s series second tournament in Victoria at Wallace Field.
 
Playing round-robin style pool games on Day 1, the host Victoria Vikes led Pool A with an unblemished 3-0 record. The Lethbridge Pronghorns currently holds second with a 2-1 mark, while Calgary (1-2) and the Fraser Valley Cascades (0-3) round out the field.
 
In Pool B, the UBC Thunderbirds posted three wins to begin the tournament with a 3-0 record, followed by the Alberta Pandas who sits at 2-1.  The Trinity Western Spartans and Victoria – Blue round out Pool B with 1-2 and 0-3 records, respectively.

Julia Omokhuale scored a pair of tries in a hard-fought 15-14 setback by the Dinos in their first match against the Pronghorns.

In a 48-0 win over the Cascades, Kachi Chinwuba and Taejah Thompson each had two tries to lead the way.

Calgary was shutout in their final match of the day, a 29-0 loss to Victoria.

UBC's Savannah Bauder led the scoring effort on Day 1, registering eight tries and four converts in three matches. Bauder put up hat trick efforts against Victoria – Blue and Alberta. The Thunderbirds' Piper Logan also ranked among the top scorers with five tries.
 
Lethbridge's Rebecca Powell recorded a three-try effort against UFV to finish with three tries on the day, while Krista Scurfield, the reigning Canada West Player of the Week from the Vikes, tallied three tries to finish the day.
 
The final day of action kicks off tomorrow, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. MT, with medal rounds beginning at 2 p.m.
