Dinos fall late to Pronghorns

CALGARY – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns had not beaten their Southern Alberta rival, the University of Calgary Dinos since 2010 – but after this weekend they have now done it twice in 2022.

The Pronghorns picked up another narrow win at the Jack Simpson Gym on Saturday night, defeating the Dinos 71-70 to extend their win streak to 10 games and improve to 10-4 on the season.

Calgary has become familiar playing in tight games, but could not find the winning bucket on a scrambly final series at the end of the fourth quarter. The Dinos are now 7-7 on the season with two games remaining before hosting the Canada West Women's Basketball Playoff Tournament in March.

"Clearly a disappointing weekend result-wise, but this young group is trending in a better direction when it comes to areas of play we have pinpointed for growth," said Calgary bench boss Damian Jennings. "Going forward it is about learning to thrive within the very fast, often frustrating and very aggressive learning-on-the-job to have it play out for 40 minutes in a game."

The game was a toe-to-toe contest for the entire four quarters. The Dinos led much of the way, but the Pronghorns always remained in striking distance. At the end of three quarters, the Dinos held a narrow 51-47 edge.

With less than four minutes remaining the Dinos held a six-point lead. Lethbridge guard Jessica Haenni poured in two three-pointers and a layup and one – which proved to be turning points in the game through an 11-2 run by the Pronghorns.

With both teams in the foul bonus, the game became a free throw match. With 1:06 remaining in the fourth quarter, Kamryn Deklerk of the Dinos split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 70. With only 50 seconds remaining Lethbridge guard Millay Johnson would match Deklerk, splitting a pair herself and giving her team a one-point lead. It was all the Pronghorns needed to secure the win.

The Dinos had a chance to take the lead at the buzzer but a three-point attempt from Annacy Palmer fell short.

Haenni led the Pronghorns with 21 points while Mya Proctor topped the Dinos with 14.

Both the Dinos and Pronghorns will face the Alberta Pandas in their final games of the regular season. Lethbridge will see Alberta first, with games from Feb. 18-19. Calgary will visit Edmonton during the final weekend of the regular season, Feb. 25-26.
