Pandas prove too much for Dinos

EDMONTON – In another stellar defensive performance, one in which the host Alberta Pandas held the Calgary Dinos to just 33-percent shooting, saw the eighth-ranked Pandas earn a 66-53 win at Saville Community Sports Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The Pandas, who own one of the best 3-point shooting defences in the nation, held the Dinos to just five made three's on 20 attempts, with the Pandas making 8-of-20 from beyond the arc.

Emma Kary led the Pandas with 16 points on 6-12 shooting, while Claire Signatovich came up just short of her fourth double-double of the season, scoring nine points to go along with 11 rebounds.

Mya Proctor led Calgary with 13 points, while Pollyanna Storie added a dozen, and Annacy Palmer dropped 11.

The Pandas are now 3-0 against Calgary this season, improving their conference record to 13-2. The Dinos, meanwhile, drop to 7-8.

Kary was excellent for the Pandas in the first quarter, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the opening 10 minutes, making four of her five shot attempts. Proctor was able to keep pace for Calgary, scoring eight points on 3-4 shooting, with Alberta holding a slim 20-16 lead after one.

Both teams ramped up their defensive effort in the second, with the two rivals combining for just 21 points. Signatovich scored six of her nine in the second, with the Pandas holding a 32-25 halftime lead.

The Pandas held a lead for nearly 35:00 minutes on Saturday, with their defence stepping up when it mattered.

The two Alberta rivals will conclude their regular season tomorrow afternoon, with tip-off scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Saville Community Sports Centre, and live on Canada West TV presented by Co-Op.
