Dinos drop weekend opener

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars defeated their Crowchild rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos, 6-1 in a hasty matchup Friday night at Flames Community Arena.

Four minutes into the first period, a beautiful passing play between linemates Riley Sawchuk and Nolan Yaremko put the Cougars up 1-0.

Less than a minute left in the opening period, MRU doubled their lead. From behind the Calgary net, Yaremko spotted Seth Bafaro at the top of the left circle, who one-timed a slap shot into the bottom right corner.

The Dinos got back into the game 10 minutes into the second period on a power-play opportunity. Jaeger White released a low wrister hitting off the right pad of Riley Morris. Riley Stotts picked up the rebound at the bottom of the right circle and found Ryan Graham in front of Mount Royal's net to make it 2-1.

MRU was able to pad their lead back to two late in the second, before finding the back of the net three times in the third.

Mount Royal has now won seven straight to improve to 13-6 overall, while Calgary sits at 11-8. The two teams will close out the regular season tomorrow night with another Crowchild Classic showdown at Father David Bauer Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m., with game broadcast available on Canada West TV, presented by Co-op.
