Dinos earn rivalry win on Seniors Night

CALGARY – Bradley Schoonbaert's late third-period goal was the game-winner as the University of Calgary Dinos won a thriller 6-4 over the Mount Royal University Cougars on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

Schoonbaert was one of four Dinos to record two points, as they split the weekend home-and-home set with their crosstown rival. The win stopped Mount Royal from clinching a bye through the first round of the Canada West Playoffs.

The Cougars end the season with a 13-6-1-0 record and remain tied with the UBC Thunderbirds at 27 points. The Dinos end the year in fifth place at 12-7-1-0, setting up a matchup against the Saskatchewan Huskies in the conference quarter-final in Saskatoon.

Kaden Elder opened the scoring four minutes into the first frame with a seeing-eye shot from the blue line during a power play. Spencer Moe responded for the Cougars with a slapshot before the period ended.

Ryan Gagnon put the Dinos back on top five minutes into the second period during a two-man advantage. James Shearer doubled the Dinos' lead on a shorthanded goal mid-way through the period. Dakota Krebs also scored late in the second frame for his first as a Dino and gave his team a three-goal lead.

The Cougars had an impressive response with back-to-back power-play goals in the third period by Riley Sawchuk and Robbie Holmes. A penalty shot goal by Moe gave him two on the night and tied the game for Mount Royal halfway through the final stanza.

Schoonbaert put Calgary back ahead for the final time and Connor Gutenberg clinched it with an insurance marker in the final minute.

"We had a good weekend against them back in November, hopefully, we play our game and have the same result, we're excited," said Schoonbaert when asked about the Dinos' postseason matchup with the Huskies.

Before the game, the Dinos recognized their graduating players. Ryan Gagnon, Ryan Graham, Tyler Gutenberg, Josh Rieger, Shearer, Tim Vanstone are in their final season with Calgary.
