Comeback effort falls just short

VANCOUVER, BC - The Memorial Sea-Hawks got over the heartbreak of their last gasp quarter final loss to Guelph by booking their place in the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship Consolation Final with an impressive  29-14 victory over the Calgary Dinos in their semi final at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Atlantic University Sport champions scored five tries on a Dinos side who scored their first points of the tournament, with Lucas Shortall leading the way for Memorial on 9 points following a try and two conversions.

Memorial dominated from the start and Simbarashe Mandoza opened the scoring when he powered through the middle for a try just five minutes in. The Dinos blocked the conversion attempt to keep things close.

The Sea-Hawks had to wait until the 28th minute to add to their tally as the teams cancelled each other out, but Memorial captain Patrick Parfrey led from the front, with another powerful surge through the middle leading to their second try of the afternoon, which Lucas Shortall converted.

With time expired, Maka Fiyaz finished off a great passing move, going over in the corner, to give Memorial a 17 point lead at the half.

The Sea-Hawks kept up their pressure after the restart and Shortall added a try to his points tally in the 40th minute, touching down on the extremes of the right corner, but was unable to convert from the tight angle.

Memorial increased their lead six minutes later with one of the tries of the day when J.S. Cook received an inside pass from Shortall and put on the speed to touch down for a converted try.

Calgary raised their intensity in the closing minutes and got their rewards with a couple of late tries in the final six minutes through Jordy Neary and Luke McDonald, both of which were converted by Keegan Neary.

The Dinos did pick up the unenviable distinction of the first red card of the week when Adham Young was sent off with three minutes of the match remaining.

Mudiwa Makanza was named Player of the Game for the Sea-Hawks, with Jack McGready getting the honour for the Dinos.

The victory saw Memorial advance to Sunday's Consolation Final where they will take on the number one seeded Victoria Vikes at 11 a.m. Tickets are available for purchase here.

Calgary will now compete in the 7th/8th placement game against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday at 9 a.m.
