Dinos run away with Western Championships

The University of Calgary Dinos Men's Rugby team hosted the Western Championships on Saturday and Sunday October 26 & 27. In town competing for the championship were the UBCO Heat, University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Weather conditions were not ideal on Saturday as the teams played in falling snow and a bitter wind which affected the kicking games for all teams. Sunday the snow had stopped, but the temperature remained cold. Despite the weather conditions a large crowd was out supporting the hometown team.
The Dinos faced the University of Saskatchewan in the first semi final on Saturday and the team never looked in danger as they took the game by a score of 21 - 3. Dinos defence was stout as they only conceded a penalty kick during the game.
Sundays championship final would see the Dinos facing their formidable foe the UBCO Heat in a rematch of the Hindson Cup (played the week before in Kelowna) where the Dinos prevailed on a last play try. Dinos came out very strong on Sunday as they scored early and often in the first half and the team defence limited the Heat in the first half of play. Second half saw the Heat come out stronger and mount a comeback, but again the Dinos applied the defensive pressure and responded immediatley to a Heat score with a try of their own. At the final whistle it was Dinos 31 and the Heat 15.

With the victory the Dinos will now travel to Victoria as they attempt to qualify for the national championships as they play the University of Victoria.
