Dinos hold on for sweep of Thunderbirds

CALGARY – A third-period goal by Connor Gutenberg secured a 2-1 win for the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team as they swept the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos now sit with a 7-3-0-0 record, while the Thunderbirds fall to 4-4-1-1 and four points behind Calgary.

"We weren't as intense as last night but it was a different game, we stayed with the 1-1 game and didn't panic, and kept playing," said Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "We had to stay composed and then we found our way on the power play."

Max Patterson got the offensive started for the Dinos. The Calgary forward stole the puck and brought it down the right side of the ice before finding Josh Maser alone in the slot for the opening goal.

UBC tied the game in the final seconds of the first period. Liam Kindree dished to Jonathan Smart from the left side of the ice to the top of the blue line. From there, Smart's shot attempt was deflected in by Jack Wismer for a power play marker.

The Dinos' response wouldn't come until the third period when they pulled ahead on the man advantage. Gutenberg showed patience moving around the defender before wiring a shot past the UBC netminder.

Calgary puck-stopper Carl Tetachuk made 25 saves, while Cole Schwebius turned away 32 attempts in the UBC net.

The Dinos will take on the Manitoba Bisons next weekend when they make the trip to Winnipeg, Nov. 11-12.

"We go on the road now so it's a lot different. If we can keep building on our level of compete and intensity, it's a step in the right direction," commented Howell.

The Thunderbirds will face off against the Trinity Western Spartans in both Vancouver and Langley B.C. next weekend.
