CALGARY -
Max Patterson found the back of the net twice in the opening period to help set the tone in a convincing 7-2 win for the Calgary Dinos men's hockey team over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night from Father David Bauer Arena.
The win moves the Dinos to 6-3, while the Thunderbirds drop to 4-3-1-1.
The Dinos got on the board right out of the gates Friday and never looked back.
Connor Horning sent a great pass to Patterson who finished backdoor for the 1-0 Calgary lead just 2:01 into the game.
Connor Gutenberg followed shortly after with a tip-in off
Marty Westhaver's shot and it was 2-0 less than three minutes into the game.
Patterson continued the momentum with his second goal after
Sean Strange passed the puck in for a successful Dinos powerplay midway through the first.
Colson Gengenbach continued the scoring spree just over a minute later with his second goal in as many games.
Calgary wasted no time in continuing their scoring outburst in the second period, as
Jake Gricius found the back of the net just 32 seconds in for his eighth goal of the season to stretch the lead to 5-0.
The T'Birds continued to battle and got on the board late in the second on a power play. Liam Kindree fired a shot from the left side and hit the cross bar before it caromed down and in, with assists credited to Jonathan Smart and Josh Williams to make it 5-1 after two.
In the third period,
Jordan Xavier and
Jaeger White both scored their first goals of the season, before Sam Huo added another power play goal for UBC to close out the scoring for the night.
"We've talked a lot about starting off strong and being ready to go and I thought today was our best start of the year," Dinos head coach
Mark Howell said. "We've had a good two weeks of practice and came out ready. Tomorrow, we have to find a way to be the same, but a notch better. (UBC) is a team to score off the rush and we cannot give them any chances to do that. I thought we did a good job of that tonight."
The Dinos and Thunderbirds will face off again Saturday at 6 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.
