CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team saw three different players find the back of the net to earn a split in the weekend series with the Trinity Western Spartans, pulling away late for a 3-1 win Saturday from Father David Bauer Arena.
The win improves the Dinos to 5-9 on the season at the midway point, while TWU moves to 7-7 with the loss.
"The outcome is a reflection of the process, and the process was better today," Calgary head coach
Carla MacLeod said after the win. "We had the opportunity before the game to work through some team stuff, like making sure we're evolving together. The execution was much better today than yesterday.
"The game is so based on energy and finding the positive energy to elevate and making sure that everyone that's going can go. Nothing's a secret in this game – it's about who executes the small details on any given day that usually determines the winner, and I thought today our details were better.
"Every team in this league is so good. You never get a weekend off, so it's back to practice."
The Spartans started off the scoring Saturday with a goal by Amy Potomak. Kailey Ledoux had the assist after she brought the puck up and around, took a shot and deflected off Potomak for the goal, in what would prove to be the lone goal of the opening period.
The score nearly stayed that way all the way through the second, as well, before Annaleise Meier changed that.
Jordyn Burgar was posting up in front of net and twice nearly was able to knock the puck into the back of the net before being denied. After the second attempt, Meier was there for the follow up and her first goal of the season to tie things up a 1-1 just before the second intermission.
Calgary carried that momentum into the third with an early goal to take the lead. Meier fired a shot on net from the right wing and TWU goalie Kate Fawcett pushed it away, only to see the rebound carom off the boards and right to rookie
Jolie Nafziger back door for her second of the season, making it 2-1 just 2:52 into the third.
The Dinos two top scorers this season
Alli Borrow and
Elizabeth Lang joined forces and got the Dinos third goal of the evening on an empty net. Borrow brought the puck down the ice for a quick pass to Lang, who put it in the back of the open net to secure the win for the home squad.
Amelia Awad stepped up as the Dinos goaltender in this one, making 22 saves and recording her first Canada West win.
The Dinos will play a split weekend against the Pandas next weekend. Friday's opener will take place in Edmonton at 7 p.m. at the Clare Drake Arena before Saturday's return game in Calgary at Father David Bauer at 6 p.m.
