Dinos hand Pandas third-straight loss

EDMONTON - Battling both a tough slate of games, and the illness bug in the dressing room, the shorthanded Alberta Pandas lost their third-straight game thanks to a 2-1 Calgary win on Friday night.

The Dinos outshot the home Pandas, 30-26, with Calgary (6-7-2) picking up their second-straight win. Alberta, who had won six-straight before their current three game slide, now sits third in Canada West with a 9-5-1 record.

Alli Borrow and Jordyn Burgar scored for the visitors, as Gabrielle Durante stopped 25 of the 26 shots she faced in one of her best performances of the season.

Cassidy Maplethorpe scored the lone Pandas goal in the third period, with Halle Oswald making 28 saves in the loss, dropping her season record to 7-5-1.

The Dinos came out the stronger side on Friday night, holding a 13-8 shot advantage through 20. Oswald was more than up to the task early, however, turning all 13 shots aside, displaying solid rebound control.

A back-and-forth second finally resulted in the game's first goal, as Borrow redirected an Elizabeth Lang point shot, with the powerplay marker giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Burgar doubled the Calgary lead early in the third, beating Oswald with her second of the season.

Maplethorpe, a Brock University transfer, cut into the Dinos lead with her 5th goal of the season late in the third. However that was as close as Alberta would come, as Durante turned aside a pair of late Pandas chances to secure the win.

The two rivals will meet up again tomorrow night in Calgary. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Father David Bauer Arena.
