CALGARY – A pair of goals less than 15 seconds apart in the second period gave the Trinity Western Spartans a lead they wouldn't relinquish in a 5-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team Friday night from Father David Bauer Arena.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 7-5 on the season, while the Dinos fall to 4-7.
The Spartans Michela Naccarato started off the teams scoring this evening. After a great initial save by
Gabriella Durante to push the puck behind her own net, Naccarato brought the puck back in front and was able to get one past the Dinos netminder for the 1-0 lead 13:36 into the game.
Calgary responded just before intermission off the red-hot stick of
Alli Borrow. The fifth-year found the back of the net for the fourth time in the last three games and the sixth time this season on a blast from the right wing to tie things up just before intermission.
That momentum didn't last for Calgary, however, as TWU was able to jump on top early in the second and grab hold of this game. Reilley Kellner scored just 2:23 into the second to put the Spartans back on top, only to see teammate Brooklyn Anderson double up the lead just 12 seconds later.
In the third period, Spartans Jordyn Matthews scored just 26 seconds in to stretch the lead to 4-1. Anderson passed in front of Durante's forehand for Matthews to shoot the puck straight in. Anderson would later end off the game with an empty net goal to seal the Spartans with a 5-1 win.
"There was some good and some things we need to work on," Dinos head coach
Carla MacLeod said after the game. "You try to keep the good in your game heading into game two, and correct the things that went wrong. It's a game of small details; stopping on pucks, finishing on net, defensive zone coverage…those are the variables we'll work through and make sure we're in a better spot come tomorrow."
The Dinos and Spartans will return Saturday for their second game of the weekend at Father David Bauer arena at 3 p.m.
