Dinos look to continue hot start

CALGARY – Fresh off a road split against the Alberta Pandas, the University of Calgary women's basketball team (3-1) will return home to the friendly confines of Jack Simpson Gymnasium for two games against the MacEwan Griffins (1-3). Tip-off for the first game is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, while action will get underway at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1. QUICK STARTERS – The Dinos have proven they know how to start seasons off on the right track. Over their past three seasons, Calgary supports a combined 10-2 record over their opening four games of the season, including a 3-1 record to begin this year's Canada West campaign. Last weekend's split – combined with an opening sweep of the UBC Okanagan Heat – have the Dinos in a tie for second place early in the season.

2. ALL TOO FAMILIAR – There will be no secrets between these two squads this weekend, as the Griffins and Dinos faced off four times during the 2021-2022 season. The teams seemed to be evenly matched, splitting both weekend series for an even 2-2 record. In the overall series, Calgary holds a 9-4 record all-time over MacEwan, including a 5-3 edge in conference games and has never lost back-to-back games.

3. BALANCED ATTACK – A major key to Calgary's early season success has been the ability to share the ball on offence. After four games, the Dinos currently have five players averaging double-digits in points per game. First-year forward Louise Rouse currently leads the way for the club, averaging 13.3 points per game, while senior transfer Madison Landry is right behind at 12.3 per game.

4. REINFORCEMENTS – The Griffins will be thankful to have a full roster available to them in Calgary, as last weekend an illness left MacEwan with just eight healthy bodies for their matchup with the Mount Royal Cougars. However, even with a depleted roster, the Griffins were able to persevere and pick up their first win of the season on Saturday, thanks in large part to a 20-point performance from Mackenzie Farmer.

5. QUOTABLE – "Our style of basketball is always looking for the most open shot, rather than who is taking the shot. This, combined with a desire to play conversion basketball, means on our better nights we should have as many as 5,6, maybe 7 players scoring in double digits." – Dinos head coach Damian Jennings.
