SASKATOON – Kennedy Brown scored with just 35 seconds remaining in overtime to give the University of Saskatchewan Huskies a 2-1 OT win over the visiting University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team Friday night from Merlis Belsher Place.
Brown closed out an even contest between the Dinos (1-2) and Huskies (2-1), knocking home the rebound in front of the net to give Saskatchewan the series-opening win on the year.
After a scoreless first, the Huskies struck first in Friday's opener early in the second period. Playing the man advantage, Saskatchewan moved the puck around the top of the zone before Taylor Wilkinson found an open Kate Ball, who one-timed the puck into the back of the net to open the scoring at the 16:33 mark.
Before intermission, however, the Dinos would respond.
With the puck deep in the Huskies zone,
Elizabeth Lang and
Sydney Mercier battled along the boards to keep the attack on. Lange was able to get possession of the puck, passing to Mercier, where the first year made a nice move around the defence before backhanding a shot to beat the keeper near post to level things up with just 1:25 left in the second.
Despite scoring chances from both squads in the third, the score remained knotted at 1-1 and seemed destined for a shootout until Brown tapped one in late in the overtime period.
Calgary keeper
Gabriella Durante finished the night with 32 saves, while Camryn Drever was credited with 24 saves in net for the Huskies.
The two teams will square off again Saturday at 7 p.m. again from inside Merlis Belsher Place.
