CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team earned their first sweep of the season and extended their win streak to three games with a 4-1 decision over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night.
The win at Father David Bauer Arena puts Calgary at 5-3-0 on the season thus far while Regina falls to 1-5-0.
Calgary continued their momentum from last night pouncing on the Cougars with shot after shot, keeping the Regina goalie very busy with 19 shots on net by the end of the first 20 minutes.
After many chances, and 14 shots on net, the Dinos finally opened the floodgates with forward
Connor Gutenberg drawing a penalty, rookie
Jadon Joseph jumping to the puck before the penalty was called to set up forward
Marty Westhaver who was parked in front of the net and simply had to tap the puck in to give his team an early lead.
But Regina came back from the first intermission with vengeance, and just over three minutes into the period defender Tyler Heidt found forward Ty Barnstable who skated behind the net to find some space and the open far side of the net to ultimately finish the play and tie up the game.
The Dinos took back the lead late in the second with forward
Tyson Upper capitalizing on a turnover in the Cougars' zone and setting up
Colson Gengenbach who sent a one-time snipe to the back of the net for his first of the season.
In the first three minutes of the third period, forward
Max Patterson capitalized on a turnover in the neutral zone and drove for the net, deked the defender and passed to
Sean Strange who snuck the puck in.
"I was just trying to get up into the play and Patterson made a really nice pass to me there and all I had to do was put it in the back of the net, so kudos to him," Strange explained.
Calgary continued to dominate in the third and at about the 10-minute mark Joseph drew a penalty which his team capitalized on. Forward
Riley Stotts sent a pass from the blue line to fellow forward
Jake Gricius who sent a one-time shot to the back of the net.
Calgary rookie netminder
Carl Tetachuk collected 22 saves in the win while Regina goalie Adam Evanoff notched 36.
"We battled hard all game, and it rewarded us," Strange commented. "Gengenbach had a really good game, he was playing really hard, Westhaver too, and Stotts and Gricius were great on the power play. I think everyone played really good today."
The Dinos are off next week but will be back in action for two games at home against the UBC Thunderbirds, Nov. 4-5. The Cougars will return to play the same weekend with games against their provincial rival, the Saskatchewan Huskies.
