Joseph's debut sparks Dinos win

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team scored three third-period goals to defeat the Regina Cougars 5-2 on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

The win puts Calgary at 4-3-0 in the season thus far while Regina fall to 1-4-0.

Calgary opened the scoring in the first period when they cleanly won a faceoff in the Cougars' zone and forward Riley Stotts perfectly set up Jake Gricius who then went top cheese to give his team the lead.

However, the Cougars quickly responded to tie the game and eventually take the lead capitalizing on two power plays within about two minutes of each other. Ty Barnstable scored at the 15:33 minute mark while Tyler Adams scored at the 17:26 minute mark.

Calgary did not let the score dictate how they played in the second period. They had many chances, trying to capitalize on the power plays they were afforded, but were just unable to buy a goal. The Cougars also had their fair number of chances, keeping both netminders busy.

But, with just 15 seconds left in the period the Dinos efforts paid off when forward Jadon Joseph scored his first goal of the season by finishing a rebound off a backhand shot by Marty Westhaver to tie up the game.

"Joseph was a standout player tonight, he came into the lineup, was fast, physical and gave us a little bit of a push physically which we needed," said Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "Sean Strange was also really good tonight, he moved his feet and had great positioning all night and Carl Tetachuk was great in net again, his assist might have went in if we wouldn't have stopped it, who knows!"

The third period started off with both teams serving a penalty from a skirmish that broke out after the late Dino goal in the second and tensions were high after an aggressive first 40 minutes resulting in both teams playing at a faster pace than the previous periods.

"We've had a bit of a history of getting ready to go on Friday nights, but other than that, we got better in the second and in the third I thought we were really good and strong and the battle level was good tonight," explained Howell. "We want to take that battle level in the third into tomorrow night."

Near the halfway point of the third and on a power play, Connor Gutenberg finished an absolute snipe of a shot going top shelf off a beautiful set up pass from Strange.

Calgary furthered their lead with less than four minutes to go in the contest with Tyson Upper putting himself in front of the net and ultimately going five hole.

The Dinos solidified their win with an empty net goal scored by Max Patterson and assisted by rookie netminder Tetachuk.

Tetachuk notched 20 saves in the win while Regina netminder Curtis Meger collected 33.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday night to face off again at Father David Bauer Arena. Puck drops at 6 p.m.
