Vikes advance past Dinos to CW Championship

EDMONTON – A strong second half the featured four tries proved too much as the Victoria Vikes powered to a 34-8 victory over the University of Calgary Dinos rugby team in the opening contest of the Canada West Final Four Thursday afternoon from Foote Field.

Calgary will now move to the CW Bronze Medal game, scheduled to kick off Sunday at 11 a.m., taking on this year's host Alberta Pandas, who fell to UBC, 64-12. Meanwhile, the Vikes will advance to Sunday's championship game against UBC at 1 p.m. MT.

After a strong early possession, the Dinos had the ball on the goal line before Ashlynn Smith found her way across for the early try to give Calgary a 5-0 lead nine minutes in.

That lead would hold until the 26th minute, when Carissa Norsten broke through for a 35-yard run for the try. Alexie Pusch successfully added the convert to give the Vikes a 7-5 edge. Victoria would add one more shortly before halftime as Ella O'Regan went out wide and just got the ball across to make it 12-5 at the break.

The Vikes proved to be too much in the second half for Calgary. Zoe Williams made it 17-5 with a try just one minute after the break.

Calgary did what they could, marching down the field before a Taejah Thompson penalty goal cut the gap to 17-8 in the 55th minute.

But the Vikes answered right back with a try by Krissy Scurfield just three minutes later, before Regan Casey and Lucie Romeo would also score in the game's waning moments to close things out.
