Dinos open 2022-23 season with home meets

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos wrestling team kicks off the 2022-23 season this weekend with a pair of home meets from inside the Jack Simpson Gym.

The action gets underway Saturday at 6 p.m. with the Dinos Duals, before returning to the mat the next morning for the Dinos Invitational at 9 a.m.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

HALL OF FAME – The University of Calgary Dinos Athletics Department recently celebrated its 2022 Hall of Fame inductees, with two former members of the Dinos wrestling team being recognized for their outstanding achievements. Justine Bouchard and Peter Guterson both were enshrined for their efforts in the Scarlet & Gold. For more about the distinguished duo and the Hall of Fame celebration, visit GoDinos.com.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR – Eilidh Wist returns for her second season after an impressive first-year campaign that saw her earn Canada West Rookie of the Year honours. The Calgary native and Bishop Carroll grad topped the 67 kg weight class in emphatic style to bring home one of three gold medals for the Dinos last season.

MORE INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS – A pair of Dinos standouts competed for Team Canada at the 2022 Senior Pan-American Championships in Acapulco, Mexico this past Spring. Recent grad Emmanuel Olapade brought home the gold medal in the 70 kg weight class, while current Dino Miki Rowbottom claimed silver on the women's side in the 65 kg class.

HISTORY OF SUCCESS – In addition to the countless individual success the Dinos have put forward over the years, Calgary's wrestling squad has certainly held its own against the best in Canada from a team perspective, as well. The Dinos have been crowned national champions five times in program history to go with 16 Canada West Championships, the most recent of which came in 2020.

MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES – Once again this season, the Dinos wrestling and women's rugby programs will have athletes on both their rosters. A former U SPORTS gold medallist in wrestling, Erin Geddie is a prop for the women's rugby team and will be relied on in the team's conference championship this weekend. Also on both teams are Gabriela Cross and Elizabeth Feddema.
