CALGARY - Tatum Amy scored with 9.6 seconds left in regulation to give the Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey team a 2-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night from the Flames Community Arena.
With the win, MRU remains undefeated at 6-0 on the year, while Calgary falls to 2-4 on the young season.
Following a lopsided win game on Friday, the Dinos responded in a big way, limiting the high-powered Cougar attack to just one goal until the game's closing moments. MRU managed a few chances, but Dinos' goaltender Gabrielle Durante shut the door at the few scoring chances, finishing with 24 saves on the night.
After a scoreless first period, Kaitlyn Ross saw her first real test early in the second. The Dinos had a couple of point-blank chances in front, but Ross turned them aside.
In a 4-on-4 mid-way through the second, MRU finally broke the ice. Emma Bergesen rifled her patented slap-pass to the stick of Camryn Amundson. Amundson redirected it over the shoulder of Durante to give Mount Royal the 1-0 lead with just 4:49 left before the second intermission.
Calgary instantly looked to answer back, but Courtney Kollman was able to block a shot off her hand as the teams went to the break with the 1-0 scoreline.
The Cougars took a costly penalty in the third. Battling behind the net on the ensuing power play, Dinos forward
Alli Borrow caught Ross going the other way, and banged the puck across the line for her first of the young season.
All signs pointed to overtime, but with just 9.6 seconds remaining in the third, the Cougars threw the puck towards the net and managed to sneak one past Durante. Tatum Amy was given credit for the goal.
Both squads hit the road next weekend. The Dinos will head to Regina for a weekend set starting Friday, while the Cougars head north to take on MacEwan.
