Strange sounds buzzer in Dinos comeback

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the crosstown Mount Royal Cougars 4-3 in double overtime at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday night.

Capping off a memorable night, which began with four of the newest members of the Dinos Hall of Fame dropping the puck in a pregame ceremony, Sean Strange completed the Calgary comeback with a goal in three-on-three overtime.

"Having that never quit attitude, relentless effort, we drew a few penalties and got some momentum, once we got those two power play goals we just kept going from there," said Strange when asked about his team's resiliency.

The Dinos split a weekend set for the third time to open the season, now holding a 3-3-0 record. The Cougars are now 3-2-1 in 2022-23.

After killing off a five-minute power play at the beginning of the first period and making numerous great saves throughout the period, Dinos goaltender Carl Tetachuk, who finished with 22 saves on the night, was beaten on a beautiful goal from Mount Royal forward Zawfir Rawji. Capitalizing off a turnover, Jared Power put the puck off the boards and then behind his back before sending it over to Rawji who made it 1-0.

The Cougars continued their dominance early in the second period as defenceman Remy Aquilon's shot was deflected off the Dinos defender and into the net. Almost immediately after, Riley Sawchuk buried his fourth goal of the season with a short side snipe which put the Cougars up 3-0 with 11 minutes to play in the second frame.

Momentum changed in the second half of the middle stanza after Mount Royal went down two skaters and Calgary capitalized on the opportunity. Calgary defenceman Dakota Krebs, who finished with two points on the night,  blasted a close range shot past Riley Sims. Just one minute later Calgary scored again on the power play, this time it was Zach Wytinck who was able to beat Sims, shrinking the lead 3-2 in favour of the Cougars.

The third period began with chances for Mount Royal as Tetachuk was forced to make big saves to keep his team in the game. The Dinos' resilience paid off as Jake Gricius scored his fifth goal of the year as the puck trickled past Sims with 13:40 left to play. There would be no more goals in regulation, or in the first overtime.

In double overtime Strange jumped on his opportunity to play hero. He raced down the ice to receive a perfectly placed pass from Colson Gengenbach and buried the game winner.

Up next the Dinos will host the Regina Cougars for two games at Father David Bauer Arena, Oct. 21-22. The Cougars will look to get back in the win column as they will play another home and home set next weekend against the MacEwan Griffins. Mount Royal will host the first game Friday night and will travel to Edmonton for Saturday's matchup.
