BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team fell to the Mount Royal Cougars, 6-1, in the Crowchild Classic on Friday, October 14 at Father David Bauer Arena.
The loss puts Calgary at 2-2-1, while Mount Royal moves to 4-0-1 in the season thus far.
The contest started with both teams coming out strong, with a lot of back-and-forth action. But, at just over three minutes into the first, Mount Royal forward Lyndsey Janes snuck behind the Calgary defence, giving herself a breakaway, and deked the goalie to score.
Then, at just before the ten-minute mark, Janes set up a tic-tac-toe play, passed to Camryn Amundson at the blue line who set up her teammate Mackenzie Butz with a one-time pass who then sent the puck top shelf to put her team up 2-0.
About five minutes later, the Cougars would pounce again on the Dinos with Jori Hansen-Young leaving a drop pass for Aliya Jomha who drove the puck to the back of the net with a slapshot.
With less than three minutes left in the first frame, Jomha capitalized on a turnover and then set up Courtney Kollman who scored with a wrister shot.
The Dinos brought back the energy they showed from the start of the game into the second period.
But, in the 6:49 minute, Janes scored her second of the night by controlling a wondering puck and launching a snapshot past the Dinos netminder.
The Dinos didn't let another goal discourage them and kept up their high energy while having a couple of great chances before Calgary rookie
Jordyn Burgar finished the puck from the slot, scoring her first goal as a Dino and robbing the Cougars goalie from a potential shutout.
Both teams started the third on a more conservative note and with a slower, more controlled pace.
But, around the eight-minute mark, Cougars Laura Cook scored a goal off a shot that just happened to trickle past the Dinos goalie.
However, the Dinos did have a good chance around the nine-minute mark, with a two-on-one play from
Alli Borrow and
Brooke Dennett, but were unable to finish and add to the score board, missing just wide of the net.
Calgary netminder
Gabriella Durante notched six saves and
Amelia Awad notched 20, while Cougars goalie Kaitlyn Ross made 20.
"At the end of the day, it's not about the scoreboard," Dinos head coach
Carla MacLeod said. "After what we thought was a bit of a slower start and being caught off guard with their speed, we found our way and we started to play a little bit better and started to generate some chances and build some momentum. As always with the game, you're looking at the process of the game and not the result of the game and this is an opportunity to learn and grow."
"Tomorrow we've just got to make sure that we are ready to go. The start of the game is critical and making simple plays early to set the pace, set a tone, and everyone find their legs that way."
The Dinos are back in action tomorrow to face their crosstown rival again. Puck drops at 6 p.m. at Flames Community Arena.
