Gricius scores twice in Dinos loss

CALGARY – In the first installment of the Crowchild Classic, the Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey team defeated their cross-town rivals the University of Calgary Dinos with a 7-2 score at Flames Community Arena on Friday night.

The Cougars opened the scoring with a powerplay goal from Andrew Fyten. Coming off a great play-making performance last weekend against TWU, Fyten managed get a goal of his own to kick things off.

The Dinos were able to tie it up quickly with a powerplay marker of their own. Jake Gricius finished off fluid puck movement from the Dinos.

The Dinos continued to press hard late in the first period but Cougars' netminder Riley Sims kept it a 1-1 game.

Josh Tarzwell broke the tie with a pass from Robbie Holmes to give MRU the lead.

Not too long after, Spencer Moe tapped in a goal off a mesmerizing passing play with Riley Sawchuk and Nolan Yaremko to extend Mount Royal's lead.

Calgary cut the lead down to one with a cross ice pass from Riley Stotts that found Gricius for his second of the night.

In the third period, the Cougars were able to take control of the close contest.

Spencer Moe got his second of the game with a short hander that beat Dinos goalie Carl Tetachuk. Shortly after, Andrew Fyten got his second of the game, with a tap in on the doorstep of the net.

Riley Sawchuk ripped a wrister past the blocker of Tetachuk before rookie forward Connor Bouchard added his own tally to make it seven for Mount Royal on the night.

The Cougars and Dinos will add another chapter to the Crowchild Classic tomorrow night at Father David Bauer Arena at 6 p.m. Be sure to catch the game live on Canada West TV.
