CALGARY – Five players found the scoreboard for the University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team as they blanked the UBC Thunderbirds 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena.
Playing with a shortened bench for a second consecutive day, the Dinos offence erupted for four goals in a 6:05 span of the second period.
Elizabeth Lang, (2a)
Rachel Paul (2a), and
Holly Reuther (1g, 1a) each finished with multi-point efforts.
At the other end of the ice,
Gabriella Durante recorded her second shutout of the season with 25 UBC shots stopped.
Elise Hugens made the start for the Thunderbirds and finished with 20 saves on 23 attempts. Reese Hiddleston turned away one of three shots in 11:42 of relief.
"I think we played a really good game yesterday, everyone battled hard," said Reuther, who celebrated her 23rd birthday with a win. "[Tonight] we did all the little things we talked about, blocking those shots, everyone contributed, everyone did their role."
Taylor Beck opened the scoring with a top shelf shot immediately off a faceoff at 5:32 of the first period. Beck's goal stood as the game-winner, but not without plenty of insurance in the middle frame.
Emily Hill doubled the Dinos' lead on the power play at 7:03 of the second period as she feathered a wrist shot through the crowd and found the back of the net.
The flood gates opened from there. Reuther added to the Dinos' lead one minute later at 8:18, followed shortly after by
Ashley Sutherland's first goal of the season.
Alli Borrow rounded out of the scoring with a power play goal to make it 5-0 at 13:08 of the second period.
With the win, the Dinos improved to 7-9-0 and take sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings – along with the final playoff position. UBC drops to 10-4-0 and is tied for third in Canada West.
UBC will look to rebound next weekend when they face the Mount Royal Cougars, Feb. 4-5 at home.
Calgary will have a week off before returning to action in a home-and-home set versus Mount Royal, Feb. 11-12.
