EDMONTON – Carl Stankowski followed up a strong Friday night with an even better showing on Saturday, stopping 30 of the 31 shots he faced, leading the University of Calgary Dinos to a 3-1 upset win over the University Alberta Golden Bears at Clare Drake Arena.
The win snaps the Bears six-game win streak while giving the Dinos their fourth win in six games. All three of the Dinos' goals came unanswered in the third period, as they erased a 1-0 deficit after 40 minutes.
Ryan Graham scored a pair, including the game-tying goal early in the third, and the insurance marker into an empty Bears net.
Kaden Elder scored the game-winner just 48 seconds after the Graham tally in the early third, as his cross-crease pass bounced in off a Bears defender, and past a helpless Taz Burman. Burman stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced, suffering just his second loss of the season, and first since Oct. 15.
Grayson Pawlenchuk snapped a five-game goalless streak, scoring the Bears lone tally in the second frame, tipping in a shot from Ethan Sakowich past Stankowski.
That was all the rubber Stankowski allowed past him, as he turned in arguably his best performance of the season. His best period was the third, as he turned aside all 11 Alberta shots he faced, including a handful of high-danger chances in the closing minutes.
The Bears, now 12-3-1, will visit the 2-13-0 Trinity Western Spartans next weekend, while the 11-6-1 Dinos will have a conference bye, before taking on the Mount Royal Cougars.
