CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team came from behind twice but could not complete the comeback as they drop a 3-2 decision to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.
The Dinos fall to 6-9-0 still holding sixth place in the conference, while UBC improves to 10-3-0 and sits in a three-way tie for second place.
Rylind Mackinnon, Chanreet Bassi and Hannah Koroll all scored for the Thunderbirds en route to the win, while
Holly Reuther and
Rachel Paul responded for the Dinos.
The Thunderbirds drew blood first, with MacKinnon scoring at 6:13 into the first period. After multiple rebounds and blocked shots, Reuther finally found the back of the net at 12:23 to draw even.
Bassi gave the Thunderbirds their second lead of the night with less than two minutes to go in the second period, as Mackenzie Kordic took the puck out from the corner and passed it to Bassi who buried top shelf behind
Gabriella Durante. Their lead was short lived though, as Paul drew the Dinos even just 28 seconds later on a big rebound in front of Elise Hugens.
Koroll broke the tie with a power play goal for the Thunderbirds just 4:54 into the final period, giving UBC a 3-2 lead and the winning goal.
"I'm incredibly proud. Playing with a shorter bench, I thought the heart we played with was inspiring," head coach
Carla MacLeod said. "We are going to continue to play our style of game, that aggressive style. We have a great opponent; we have to play to our best."
Durante made 18 saves in net, while Hugens made 21 saves in the win. The Dinos will rematch against UBC tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Father David Bauer Arena.
