Dinos stifle Cougars in sweep

CALGARY – The No. 9 University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team dominated all four quarters en route to a 74-42 victory over the Mount Royal University Cougars on Saturday night at the Jack Simpson Gym.

The Dinos held the Cougars to four points in the opening quarter and just 7.1 percent shooting. By halftime, Calgary led 29-13 and expanded it during the second half.

It was the kind of performance that Dinos head coach Damian Jennings will be looking to build on throughout the remainder of the regular season.

"To contain a team as aggressive and as assertive as Mount Royal to only 13 points at halftime – I was pleased with the level of effort and execution."

Coming off a long layoff since their last set of games, the Dinos have now opened the second half of the season with a pair of wins and improved their record to 5-3. Meanwhile, the Cougars fall to 2-6 in Canada West competition.

"We still have a lot of little things to clean up. As far as I'm concerned tonight was a positive shift forward for us," added Jennings.

The Dinos' offence was well-rounded with each player scoring at least a bucket. First-year forward Pollyanna Storie was the top scorer with 12 points while adding five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.

Mount Royal committed 29 turnovers, which led to 33 Calgary points. The Dinos finished with 19 steals, including four by Amélie Collin.

While the Cougars offence struggled, Jamie Lalor finished with a team-high 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Dinos are back in action next weekend when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas, while the Cougars visit the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Jan. 21-22. All games can be seen on Canada West TV, presented by Co-op.
