Collin sinks Griffins in final minute

CALGARY – A go-ahead three-pointer by Amélie Collin secured a 50-46 victory for the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team against the MacEwan University Griffins on Friday night at the Jack Simpson Gym.

Separated by a mere point in the final minutes of the game, the Dinos and Griffins traded leads before the Collin bucket and a clutch rebound by Mya Proctor allowed the home side to hold on for their sixth win of the season.

While the Dinos improve to 6-3, the Griffins slip to 1-7 and have now lost five in a row.

"It's good to win but the manner in which we let ourselves off in moments both on the offensive and defensive end set a tone in which we let the group down," said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. "It took a really, really, hard effort at the end to push us over the edge."

On a night where neither team could get into a shooting rhythm, the Dinos relied on their depth to get past the Griffins, with the Calgary bench outscoring MacEwan's 24-3.

At the half, the Dinos had held the Griffins to 20 points and led by five.

While trailing for most of the evening, the Griffins took advantage of their opportunities to keep the score close, including 10-for-11 from the charity stripe while outrebounding the home side.

Calgary's young roster made up for its shooting woes with a solid effort defensively. Star rookie Annacy Palmer had a well-rounded effort with 11 points, six rebounds, and four blocks, while fellow freshman Collin had five assists and four steals to go along with her five points.

After Collin had hit her go-ahead shot, it was Proctor who grabbed the offensive rebound and hit a pair of free throws to make it a two-score game. Proctor finished with night with a game-high 14 points.

The Griffins were led by Mackenzie Farmer who produced 13 points for her side.

The Dinos and Griffins will face off on Saturday at 5 p.m. in their final matchup of the season at the Jack Simpson Gym.
