CALGARY – Kaden Elder scored twice as the University of Calgary Dinos picked up a decisive 5-2 win over the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday evening at the Father David Bauer Arena.
Playing their first contest in nearly seven weeks, the Dinos dominated from start to finish, outshooting the Spartans 50-11 and converting on four of six power play opportunities in their first-ever meeting against Trinity Western.
Elder's first came on the man advantage as the Dinos finally solved Talor Joseph at the 18:23 mark of the opening period. The second-year forward added a second power play goal four minutes into the second, with
Tim Vanstone and
Connor Gutenberg also tallying with the extra attacker as Calgary took a 4-0 lead into the second intermission.
Dinos defenceman
James Shearer netted his first goal of the season with a shot that would squeak through Joseph's legs at 1:46 into the third period. Trinity Western got one back on a 5-on-3 situation midway through the period courtesy Travis Verveda, and Jordan Bogress added another in the final stages for the Spartans.
"We got a lot of power play opportunities tonight and I think our team capitalized on those (chances) really well," reflected Elder. "Our power play was our main execution tonight and what put our offense into perspective tonight."
Dinos goaltender
Carl Stankowski made his first career Canada West start Friday evening. On recording his first career win, teammate Elder remarked, "It was awesome to see that for him. We played together on the Hitmen before I came here so I've known Carl for a few years now and he earned it tonight."
In the Trinity Western goal, Talor Joseph turned away many shots from the Dinos, making 45 saves on 50 shots.
The Dinos and Spartans meet again on Saturday afternoon back at the Father David Bauer Arena. Puck drops at 2 p.m. MT and can be seen live on Canadawest.t.v, presented by Co-op.
