CALGARY – Arjun Atwal's six points propelled the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team to a dominant 9-2 win against the Trinity Western University Spartans on Saturday afternoon at Father David Bauer Arena.
The Dinos held a massive shot advantage, for a second straight game, outshooting the Spartans 57-16. After 40 minutes that were tightly contested on the scoreboard, Calgary's offence was ignited in the third period with six consecutive goals.
Half of Atwal's production came during the final frame. He credited playing with confidence when asked about his offensive performance.
"In junior I had some success individually and I want to try to carry that over. There was a bit of a transition period for me in the first half [of the season], but in the second half I want to give it a little more and keep growing as a player."
The Dinos earned their second sweep of the season and improve to 9-4-0, while the Spartans slip to 1-13-0.
Calgary got on the board early as defenceman
Noah King found the back of the net on a power play goal three minutes into the game.
The Spartans responded with their first short-handed goal of the season courtesy of Jeremy Klessens at the 7:53 mark.
Klessens would rifle another puck past Dinos goaltender
Carl Stankowski in the early stages of the second period, this time with an extra attacker on the ice, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
James Shearer answered back for the Dinos at 10:59 to even the score, while
Max Patterson recorded his first goal of the season in the final moments of the second to put Calgary ahead.
A mere 44 seconds into the third period, Shearer extended the Dinos' lead with his second goal of the game. At the 5:03 mark, Patterson picked up his second of the afternoon as he put the puck away on a wraparound.
From there, the floodgates opened with Calgary adding four more goals, provided by
Tim Vanstone,
Bradley Schoonbaert,
Josh Rieger, and Atwal.
"We want to build towards playoffs here and build some consistency as a group," said Atwal. "Working hard collectively, using our break, and trying to grow as a team. We're a younger team and the first half was a little up and down."
The Dinos will travel to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Winter Sports Centre, Jan. 21-22. After a week off, the Spartans will continue their road swing as they head east for a couple of games against the Manitoba Bisons January 29-30 at Wayne Fleming Arena.
