CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal University Cougars split points in their final meeting of the season, a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Dinosaur Field.
Coming off a 2-1 loss to Mount Royal on Friday, the Dinos opened the scoring in the rematch. The Cougars responded in the second half to take four out of a possible six points from the weekend.
The Dinos' record now sits at 4-1-1, while the Cougars move to 2-3-1 in conference play.
The Dinos got off to a quick start on Saturday as the conference's top goal scorer stayed hot. A well executed ball found
Montana Leonard in front of the goal, where she tapped in her eighth of the season. Assists on the play went to
Talia White and
Laura Kautz.
Mount Royal started the second half firing on all cylinders. In the same way that the Dinos began the first half with a goal, the Cougars wasted little time getting on the score sheet after the break. Ashtyn Haycock netted her first goal of the season with the help of an assist from Sharnae Sedres. The goal came only minutes after Dinos goalkeeper
Lauren Houghton had punched a ball away on a dangerous Mount Royal set piece.
In the final moments of action, the Dinos would come inches away from securing the win as a header from the Dinos bounced off the crossbar in the 89th minute.
Calgary heavily outshot Mount Royal 17-8. The Dinos managed nine shots on goal, compared to six by the Cougars.
The Dinos now turn their attention to the Lethbridge Pronghorns, who they will face in a home-and-home set next weekend. The Cougars will travel north to take on the Alberta Pandas, Oct. 2-3.
