CALGARY – In front of a record crowd at Dinosaur Field, the University of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars played to a thrilling 2-2 tie on Friday night.
With fans from both schools filling the sidelines, the Dinos and Cougars put on a show. Mount Royal took 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but each time the home team responded to grab a point in their first game of the year.
"We've got a lot of pace. We can go from back to front really quickly," explained Dinos head coach
Brendan O'Connell when asked about his team.
With a high-tempo kicking off the evening, it was a penalty kick by Mohamed El gandour that opened the scoring in the 21st minute. The Dinos responded just over five minutes later as team captain
Adam Huskic leapt and got his head on a ball in off a corner kick by
James Greco-Taylor.
It appeared the score would be 1-1 headed into halftime, but a last-second attempt off the foot of Dane Domic gave Mount Royal the lead as the ball barely got past Calgary goalkeeper
Jake Ruschkowski.
The Dinos levelled the score for the second time in the 55th minute off another corner kick by Greco-Taylor. This time it was
Derek Brust getting the final touch to round out the scoring in the match.
The Dinos outshot the Cougars 14-9. That included seven shots on goal by Calgary, compared to six by Mount Royal.
The rivalry continues Saturday evening when the Dinos and Cougars return to Dinosaur Field. The action begins at 7 p.m.
