Alberta draws first blood in top-10 battle

CALGARY – Conference powerhouses lived up to the billing on Friday night, as the No. 2-ranked Alberta Golden Bears defeated the No. 8 Calgary Dinos 82-73 in the Jack Simpson Gym.

With the victory, the Golden Bears stay perfect on the season and the Dinos fall to 3-2.

Tyus Jefferson led the way for the Golden Bears with a metronomic 24pts – orchestrating quality looks throughout the second half as the Calgary crowd spurred on the Dinos comeback. The veteran leadership of the Golden Bears proved vital, quelling four Calgary runs in the second half.

In the first action at the Jack Simpson Gym in over 20 months both teams shook off early jitters. A Lars Ishmiwe ankle-breaking step back three was reprieve from an otherwise disjointed opening quarter.

Reigning second team all-star forward Mason Foreman kept the Dinos afloat early – generating 24 points from every level of the floor. The suffocating Golden Bears defence responded with pressure inside on the Calgary stretch-big and the Dinos offence sputtered to end the first half.

Trailing by six midway through the third, the Dinos earned two free throws and the ball following a clear path foul. They scored zero points from the possession and later watched as the Golden Bears capitalized on a similar two shots and the ball possession to build a 15-point lead heading into the fourth.

Noah Wharton was able to shake the hounding Golden Bears defence out of his jersey in the final frame, pouring in four triples to make the closing minutes interesting. Trailing by seven with 18 seconds left, Wharton missed a deep three, and the Golden Bears closed the game out.

With three remaining matchups against Alberta this season, the Dinos will take plenty from this game. Going blow-for-blow with one of the top teams in the nation, while witnessing the granular details it takes to come out on top in CW will be invaluable as this young group looks to grow as the season continues. We are all in for a treat watching it play out.

Tip off Saturday is at 7 p.m. MST on CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
