CALGARY – With injuries mounting, the Calgary Dinos fell to the No. 2 Alberta Golden Bears 96-67 Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.
Following a strong start from the Calgary backcourt injuries took their toll, with primary offensive weapons
Mason Foreman and
Noah Wharton both exciting midway through the second quarter. From there, the rout was on.
The Golden Bears scored 25 points in each of the final three quarters, finishing +18 from three-point range and +22 in the paint. On Friday night the Golden Bears shot 37% as a team, on Saturday seven Golden Bears were 50% or better from the field.
Third-year forward Adam Paige led the way for the Golden Bears, scoring a team-high 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting.
With the Dinos labouring in the final 25 minutes of gameplay, Calgary fans turned their attention to
Manyang Tong. The freshman Calgary forward is a highlight machine, and a strong fourth- qquarter performance Friday earned Tong a starting spot Saturday – and he was electric. At both ends of the court Tong brought energy and excitement, punctuated by a dunk to end the third quarter.
Tong wasn't the only first year bright spot for the young Dinos squad, as
Aidan Smith was three-for-three from three-point range.
Aingar William's relentless motor and rim presence was extremely encouraging for a team still looking to fill the void of 2020 national player of the year
Brett Layton.
The loss moves Calgary to 3-3 on the season with a match-up against crosstown rivals MRU next week.
