Grind-it-out Dinos earn split with Griffins

EDMONTON – With a gritty effort, the top-ranked University of Calgary Dinos rebounded from an upset defeat Friday night to split their weekend series with the MacEwan Griffins, earning a 71-64 victory Saturday in the David Atkinson Gym.

Calgary improves to 3-1 with the victory as the Dinos head into a bye week.

After spotting the Griffins an early lead Friday night, the Dinos found themselves down after the first and second quarters again Saturday. They turned the tide, however, with a 12-0 run in the third quarter, then held on down the stretch as MacEwan came back to tie it at 55-55 early in the fourth.

"It's pleasing to win in the manner in which we did with the youth and the new team we have this year," said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. "Respect for MacEwan for the way they played, they gave us two very challenging games. Overall, though, I'm pleased with the response to yesterday's performance. It wasn't easy, but I'm proud of how the youth within our team responded."

Rookie Annacy Palmer was the Dinos' top scorer for the third time in four conference games, with Lily Pink matching her with 14 points apiece. Polyanna Storie chipped in 13, while Tiarra Davis added 11 in just 11 minutes on the floor.

"Annacy is part of the core youth group getting a baptism of fire, and she has been stellar at both ends of the floor," Jennings said of the freshman. "She's realizing at this level you have to play a two-way game. She has that savviness and poise about her on offence, but she is beginning to add value and use her length defensively also."

It was a sloppy contest for both teams, with the squads combining for 54 turnovers in the contest – 33 of those charged to MacEwan, with the Dinos notching 10 steals on the night.

Following the week off, the Dinos finally open at home Nov. 26-27 when they face the Alberta Pandas in the Jack Simpson Gym.
