LETHBRIDGE – In her second Canada West game, first-year guard
Annacy Palmer looked like a veteran, scoring 31 points to lead the University of Calgary Dinos to a 75-56 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night.
The Dinos led by 15 at halftime but watched as the Pronghorns chipped away at the lead throughout the second half and eventually pulled within nine to start the fourth quarter. Palmer's shooting helped Calgary secure the weekend sweep, going 12-of-17. The Pronghorns were once again led by Savannah McMahon, who scored 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
With the win, the Dinos start the season 2-0, while the Pronghorns drop to 0-2.
The first quarter saw both teams rely on shots from beyond the arc to establish their offensive games. Shooting a combined nine threes in the quarter, the Dinos capitalized on three of their five shots from long range, while the 'Horns sunk only one of their four attempts. The visitors would outrebound the home side 13-5.
The second quarter was characterized by sloppy play by the 'Horns, leading to nine turnovers in the quarter. The Dinos capitalized on the extra possessions and pushed the ball up the floor for easy points in transition.
The Pronghorns came out of halftime reenergized. Tightening up on the defensive side of the ball, the 'Horns would limit the Dinos to only 10 points in the quarter. The Dinos cooled down from beyond the arc as they only connected on two of their 11 attempts during that span. McMahon would score eight of Lethbridge's 16 points in the quarter.
The final quarter would slip away from the Pronghorns, as the full-court pressure of the Dinos proved to be too much for the inexperienced Lethbridge group.
The Pronghorns will travel up the QE2 next weekend from a series against the Alberta Pandas. The Dinos will enter a bye weekend, returning to action Nov. 12-13.
