Griffins secure division over Dinos

CALGARY – The MacEwan University Griffins regained first place in the Central Division, defeating the University of Calgary Dinos 3-0 on Sunday at Dinosaur Field.

The Griffins will host a Canada West Quarter-Final next weekend against the Fraser Valley Cascades, entering the postseason with a 10-2-0 record. The Dinos will go on the road next weekend, after falling to 9-2-1, and will face the Saskatchewan Huskies.

"Full credit to MacEwan, they battled extremely hard and made it difficult, we had some opportunities as well but they took there's," said Dinos head coach Troye Flannery. "Loved what Laura Kautz brought, she was special. We missed Shyanne Hedges to injury and needed to manage minutes for those with two yellows."

The Griffins were quick to strike as they opened the game with a goal in the seventh minute. Griffins forward Salma Kamel sent a pass across the field to a streaking Grace Mwasalla who sent the ball to the back of the net.

The Griffins struck again in the second half as Dinos goalkeeper Lauren Houghton came out of the goal to challenge the MacEwan attack. The play was won by Raeghan McCarthy who had a wide-open net to give the Griffins a 2-0 lead.

In extra time, the Griffins added a third and final goal as Meagan Lemoine rocketed a shot from afar into the top corner of the goal.

The Dinos playoffs begin on Friday, Oct. 29 in Saskatoon.
