SASKATOON – Goalkeeper Jadyn Steinhauer played hero as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team defeated the University of Calgary Dinos in penalty kicks in the Canada West quarter-final on Friday night at Griffiths Stadium.
After a scoreless 120 minutes, it took penalty kicks to provide an answer - an answer Steinhauer almost single-handedly gave, stopping three of the five Dinos attempts from the spot en route to a Huskies win.
"A difficult pill to swallow, I am absolutely gutted for our young women," said Dinos head coach
Troye Flannery. "You cannot fault the effort, you cannot fault the performance. Exceptionally proud of the women in the room. We have a bunch of fifth- and sixth-years. That's why I do what I do.
"They will win at life, but not necessarily tonight, I am proud of them."
Saskatchewan had fallen in three-consecutive Canada West quarter-final matches, but Friday was different. The Huskies are set to appear in the fourth Final Four in program history.
At the opposite end of the pitch, the loss spelled the end to the season for the Calgary Dinos, who were fresh off a 9-2-1 regular season and second-place finish in the Central Division.
"I'm super disappointed for us obviously. It stings because we have some quality and I thought we showed that for big chunks of the game today," said Flannery.
"The Huskies fed off that home crowd who did a good job. I'm happy for Jerson and his program. He does fantastic things here."
