Leonard makes history, Dinos move into first

CALGARY – Montana Leonard set a new Canada West single-season record with her 17th goal of the year, highlighting a 4-0 victory by the University of Calgary Dinos over the MacEwan University Griffins.

A fifth-year midfielder, Leonard became the Dinos' all-time leading goal scorer last weekend. With her score in the 81st minute on Saturday at Dinosaur Field, she surpassed former UBC Thunderbird Janine Frazao's 16-goal season from 2011.

"Today was just a really special day," said Dinos head coach Troye Flannery.

"I am ridiculously proud of her and the way she carried herself when all eyes were on her. It has been fantastic how she has gone about her business and I love the fact that our team rallied around her."

A 1-0 game at the half, the Dinos scored a trio in the final 45 minutes to move past the Griffins into first place in the Canada West's Central Division. Calgary improves to 9-1-1, while MacEwan slips to 9-2-0 – with their only losses coming against the Dinos.

"I am very proud of the team today in very difficult circumstances with respect to the weather. MacEwan is a good team, well-coached, good players, and we did a really good job at doing the things we're good at," mentioned Flannery.

Laura Kautz opened the scoring in the 33rd minute after Griffins goalkeeper Bianca Castillo was unable to secure a rebound after a specular save. Kautz rocketed the rebound into the open net for her first goal of the season.

Kelsie MacDonald broke through the Griffins defence in the 63rd minute and snuck a shot under a diving Castillo to give the Dinos a 2-0 lead.

Leonard's record-breaking tally along with a second goal by Kautz put the game out of reach in the final 10 minutes.

The Dinos and Griffins will face off again on Sunday at 12 p.m. in the regular-season finale with the Central Division title on the line.
