BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary women's hockey team welcomed fans back inside Father David Bauer Arena for the first time in far too long, treating the home crowd to a 3-1 Dinos win over Canada West newcomer MacEwan.
Three different Dinos found the back of the net Friday, while
Gabriella Durante did her part, saving 28 of 29 shots to help secure the W.
The win was the first for new head coach and Calgary native
Carla MacLeod.
Durante and the Dinos defence were forced into early action, having to defend against a whopping five first-period penalties. They proved to be up to the task, blocking all 14 shots of the opening frame.
"It was important for us not to ebb and flow with them," MacLeod said of her team keeping momentum despite the early penalties. "As a team, we stayed collectively even."
Things started to turn the Dinos direction in the second, outshooting the Griffins, 15-6, in the frame, while defender
Bridget Rezansoff made a huge sacrifice block to keep the game scoreless.
The deadlock was finally broken just before the game's midway point as fifth-year forward
Sage Desjardins found the back of the net for Calgary.
The pace of the game remained fast and furious, as the Dinos made it 2-0 off the stick of
Taylor Beck shortly after
Alli Borrow was knocked to the ice.
MacEwan kept the pressure on early in the third on an unassisted goal by Amanda Murray, but first-year
Kate Wagner notched the first Canada West goal of her young career to push Calgary's lead back up to two and close out the scoring on the evening.
The Dinos are right back at it tomorrow night for a rematch against the Griffins with a 6 p.m. start at Father David Bauer Arena.
