EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos maintain their position tied at the top of the Canada West's Central Division following a 1-0 win over the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday at Foote Field.
The win sees the Dinos improve their record to 4-0-3 as they remain tied with the Mount Royal Cougars with 15 points, although the Dinos have a game in hand. The Golden Bears fall to third in the division with a 3-1-3 record and will be jockeying for a home playoff game at the end of the month.
Koen Schoffner provided the decisive and only score of the game in the 44th minute for the Dinos, an outside the box effort assisted by midfield partner
Eryk Kobza. The goal was Schoffner's second of the season and second in as many games after recording his first tally as a Dino last weekend in Saskatchewan.
Despite the low-scoring affair, the first half was not without its opportunities. Dinos goalkeeper
Jake Ruschkowski was outstanding, parrying aide six shots on goal by Alberta, while Liam Collens turned away three out of four shots by Calgary on net.
The game tightened up in the second half with both sides only getting one shot on goal each.
It is the second straight win at Foote Field for the Dinos, with the previous meeting being a 3-1 victory on Sept. 8, 2019.
The two teams return to action on Saturday at Foote Field in a pivotal matchup in the Central Division playoff race. The Dinos could clinch a berth with a win, while Alberta looks to rebound from a hard-fought loss.
